R: The most miserable weekend of the year so far and I decide I want to be out and about all day. On the bright side, I discovered two new hang out spots near my apartment that I really like. Petite Abeille is technically a breakfast/brunch place but it serves all day long and has an extensive Belgian beer list which goes for half off on Mondays. And the bonus is that it's literally a block from where I live. The second find is the newest Grey Dog Coffee located a short five minute walk from me, two avenues away. Unlike the other Grey Dog's this one is relatively spacious and not very crowded. I ordered the fish tacos - because I love fish tacos - and the Lighthouse Ale, which was light and hit the spot. The tacos weren't bad; they were definitely different though with roasted vegetables and chipotle dipping sauce. Probably not something I'll want every time I go to Grey Dog because I plan to go a lot.

C: Despite being a miserably rainy day, the day wasn't as unproductive as it could have been. On most days like this, I will lament my choice of residence and wish I lived closer to at least few of the people I know in this city. Then I might briefly attempt to get people to visit me (most people I know live where the T is underground, so at least they don't have to get soaked while they wait for a T) and inevitably give up when I realize I am not the only one deterred by the crappy weather.

M needed to do some work at school today, so I thought I would tag along and then meet Xie at her place. Early in our conversation, she mentioned that one of their toilets wouldn't flush, so I suggested we investigate because it might be as simple as something being disconnected. In all honesty, I have never tinkered with the toilet tank before, but I was fairly confident about what needed to be done based on watching other people.

After being rather embarrassingly girly-squeamish about the process (Xie had her gloves on, and I am not one for germs though I will get dirty if I really have to), we quickly diagnosed the problem. Xie finally got her hand in there to grab the chain and re-hook it to the trip lever. It was a big day for us both.

  1. I'm so glad that our toilet-fixing skills were featured in this. We should have our own show on HGTV: Handy Small Asian Girls
