R: I somehow missed that the closest city library to my apartment is less than a quarter of a mile away. Turns out, I've walked by it hundreds of times since I moved here and always assumed it was a church. Going inside it today, I realized that I wasn't really wrong: it is definitely a church...filled with books. Browsing the religion section - is it weird that the only thing I remember about the Dewey Decimal is that 200s are religion? - I found the book Jesus is Not a Republican particularly fitting for the location. Only the City of New York would take an old church in the West Village and reappropriate it as a public library. It's really lovely.
On a related note, after nearly five years here I finally have a library card, and I plan to wear it out. The NYPL at Jefferson Market is my new favorite hang out on Mondays.
