05 de mayo 2010

R: I love Cinco de Mayo, if only because it is an excuse to drink tequila and eat tacos in excess. B and I made our way to SoHo to pig out at my favorite fish taco joint on Lafayette Street (I just looked that up). I usually can find this place with my eyes closed since I never bothered to remember the cross streets, but this time I led us in circles, crossing paths several time with a film crew. We didn't stop to find out which film, mostly because I wanted my damn fish tacos asap. Fortunately, my stubborn pursuit paid off, and we were in tacqueria heaven. Then off to find some tequila. Most people get sick off the stuff and never come back, but I really can't get enough. It's my favorite shot.

C: Our little group at PEPFAR decided to have a somewhat impromptu Cinco de Mayo celebration at lunch today. I made a Mexican Hot Chocolate Flan; I was going with a flan recipe from NYT, but gave up when the Brookline supermarkets failed me...yet again. Instead, I turned to Papa G's failproof recipe, with slightly healthier modifications and the addition of semisweet chocolate and spices to get the right flavor. Lylo brought fresh produce and made a delicious guacamole in our kitchenette.

On the other hand, Pelu and Sugarland ran across the street to Brigham Circle shops, popping into Stop & Shop and Applebee's just before the lunch hour to grab...chicken quesadillas, Fanta orange soda and...clementines. First of all, I was marginally disappointed in Pelu for choosing Applebee's over the locally-owned Montecristo Mexican Grill around the corner. Also, I can't remember exactly what they decided the justification was for the latter two contributions, but either Sugar failed to recognize that his own people are the originators of the citrus fruit (they are called mandarins after all), or he has been so brainwashed in Texas that he truly believes all citrus fruits originate from Mexico. Cultural fail. Don't you people know that these sour-bitter-sweet fruits come from Asia? At least it wasn't anything French.

J/k kids, I still like you.
