R: After dinner, Y, J and I decided to go to a bar for a few drinks. However, Y's sense of direction is pretty bad despite the fact that she spends more time in the SoHo/NoLIta area than both J and I. In the end, it was my fault we ended up wandering around the near-empty blocks enclosed by Broadway-Lafayette and Spring-Prince streets. Luckily, we're in a city of impromptu art and performance, and we ran across this very clever fellow as he was putting the finishing touches on his sidewalk piece.

C: For M's 24th, the three of us (Big D treated us) had lunch at Stephanie's on Newbury, and then went for some golf at McGolf's (seriously, that's their name) in Dedham. M had his time at the driving range with two buckets of balls, and then he took us on for a competitive full round of putt-putt (a.k.a. "mini golf" as they call it in the Northeast - weird, right?).

I use the term "competitive" loosely, of course. I was doing okay for awhile but a couple of quadruple bogeys (nothing was more than a par 3) earlier in the game killed my score; I am the worst when the hole is a par 2 and a straight shot on a more or less flat surface. Finally, my excitement at the 18th defeated me completely when I shot 8 on a par 3 - that should have been a birdie - and D beat me by four measly points. Of course, M beat us all by a solid 20 points, but I think that should be the case for the birthday boy.
