R: Last night I went to a benefit concert with Rosama and H, and although I drank all of one two beers over the course of the several hours, I still woke up feeling and looking rather rough. Sometimes my head decides to crap out on me, and there's not much I can do about it except try to sleep through the crappiness. I did make an effort though and insisted that Rosama and I take a trip to Anthropologie to try on dresses. H had told me in his drunkeness last night to convince his wife to buy a dress from there because she adores the store but can't justify the prices. I generally feel the same way and even though I have a lighter grip on my wallet, I have only been able to work up the courage to buy a mug and an overpriced belt from the store.
However, we were on a mission to at least try on the clothes that we love. I pulled a couple of items on sale and wandered around for a random item on the floor just for fun. Meanwhile Rosama also grabbed an armload of sale items and one or two regularly priced ones. I ended up randomly picking up a Tracy Reese dress in an orangey-red that caught me eye for it's vintage feel and intricate embroidery. Rosama found a lovely cream-colored 70s inspired number with gold detailing on sale for an unbelievable $40. I actually loved the dress on her. It's not her usual look but the cut-out back with short ruffle were very flattering from behind. The front hung a little too loosely on her, but I convinced her that a good tailor could easily take in the sides - I mean for the price she just had to buy it. And she did, just in time for a friend's wedding next weekend.
On my part, I ended up loving the Tracy Reese dress. I looked like the spitting image of my mother when she was younger, and I was more than a little taken aback at my reflection. Both Rosama and the salesgirl exclaimed over it when I came out of the dressing room, and I hadn't even looked at the price yet. Deep breath - $288. Yikes. I tried to explain to myself that sometimes these things are worth the price tag, but I still couldn't take the plunge in the end. I bought a gorgeous lemon-lime top as a consolation prize and have my fingers crossed that the Tracy Reese will go on sale and my size 0 will miraculously survive the price cut.
Allston's SoulFire was the answer. Not only did we find our corndogs (4 half-size pups for $5.75), M apparently discovered one of the best pulled pork sandwiches he has tried so far (in the Greater Boston Area). Being from Texas, the main dishes he considers the true tests of good barbecue are pulled pork and brisket. Unfortunately, he ate his sammie so fast that I didn't get a chance to try it, but my brisket was pretty good: tender and juicy but I do prefer a crisper, charred crust on the outside. My meal came with cornbread, pickles and two sides (rice and beans and collared greens; I had to get my veggies, you know...they were good too). The sweetened iced tea was decent (M thought it could have been sweeter). After overstuffing myself per usual, I managed to force myself to quit and went home with some leftovers for once. Lunch will be great tomorrow.
