R: I was happy to see the sun again, despite the temperatures remaining in the twenties. It seems to me that New York City was the only place on the whole of the East Coast - well at least from Virginia north - that didn't get so much as a snowflake this weekend. Not that I'm complaining, but it only reinforced the feeling that I'm living in a tiny little universe untouched by the reality surrounding it.

Along the same lines, I seem to forget that there's more to my life than the strange L-shaped area between Union Square and Long Island City. I tend to neglect everything west of Fifth Avenue (east being the default direction of movement on any given day), which is stupid because in many respects the Union Square area is devoid of real character due to the abundance of big retail and tourists. (The real question is which came first? The chickens or the Forever21?) I'm now making an effort to remember the less flashy and more palatable sister avenue to the west.

Pictured is the street view from Sixth Avenue. You can vaguely see the Empire State Building in the background, which is better viewed from Fifth Avenue though one hardly notices it in the rush to get away from the unwashed masses.

C: Tonight we had apple-stuffed pork chops, and the regular starches didn't make too much sense to complete the meal. This is probably the most green I've seen on my plate since the year started. I suppose if I had a New Year Resolution, it should be to eat my vegetables. Seriously. I really like vegetables, but my typical meal of meat and rice is filling enough, while downsizing portions of one or the other to make room for the garden isn't really an option. I'm blaming it on my padres; I couldn't be punished for not eating something that was rarely on our plates in the first place.
